Hello! I find summer to be a fab time to use all the nice, bright, summery bags when stepping out. They add a great accent to any outfit, but honestly, they just spell summer for me. All that lovely outdoorsy picnic-in-the-park vibes that radiate out of them - always puts me in a great mood!
So I've decided to publish the pattern for my Slouchy Boho Bag!
You can buy the actual product here at my Etsy store, or custom order one for yourself; but for those of you makers who'd like to create one of your own, here you go!
This pattern is made up of 15 squares. I've used one of my classic favourites - the Willow Granny Square. This is one of those squares that have been around for ages, and no one knows who originally designed it. Its a variation of the classic granny square and its made up of basic crochet stitches such as chains, single crochets, and double crochets. Its known for its delicate floral center that expands into a square frame. Its a lovely, open airy pattern that lends to the feel of summer.
For this particular piece, I used one ball each of Hobbii Yarn's Friends Cotton 8/4 Print in Fresh Mint and their Rainbow Cotton 8/4 in Natural White. I also added in a variation for 5 of my squares using Mint from the same range. These come as 50gm balls and are perfect for crocheting with as they have a handy easy-use tab that allows you to draw the yarn from the center of the ball, rather than it unravelling all over the place. As a cat mum, I can assure you, this little switch of how the ball is spun has been IMMENSELY helpful, because neither of my two get distracted by what would have otherwise been a fast moving ball of yarn they mistake as their next favourite play-thing! You will need 1 ball of white (or whatever you choose your boundary colour to be), and 2 balls of colour based on what you choose to use, for the entire pattern. I used a 3mm hook which I felt gave it the flow I wanted, yet kept it close enough to look like lovely neat stitches. Each square measures 5.35" x 5.35" (13.5cm x 13.5cm) and need to be blocked after they've been made to really let the pattern stand out. Pattern
Step 1 Making the Willow Granny Square - you need 15 in total.
Chain 4 and join to first st OR make a Magic Ring
Round 1 Ch 3; 15 dc into magic ring - total 16 st (15+3ch). Join with sl st to third chain from the first 3 ch.
Round 2 4 ch (counts as 1dc + 1ch) into first st. 1 dc + 1ch in every stitch around. Total 16 dc + 16 ch sp
Round 3 Chain 3 in first stitch, 2dc in ch sp. 1dc in next dc + 2dc in ch sp all around. Attach to 3rd chain from first 3ch with sl st.
Round 4 Sc into same sl st; 5 ch, leave 2 st and sc in 3rd st from 5-ch column (forms first corner). [3 ch, leave 2 st and sc in 3rd] x 3; 5 ch, leave two st and sc in 3rd all the way around. Sl st to first sc. (4 5-ch sp + 12 3-ch sp)
Round 5 Sl st into 5 ch sp, and ch3. 4dc, 3ch, 5dc into 5 ch sp. Sc into 3 ch sp. 7dc into next 3 ch sp. Sc into next 3 ch sp. 5dc+3c+5dc into 5ch sp. Repeat all the way around. Join with sl st to top of first ch3. Fasten off.
Round 6 Change to new colour. Attach thread to 4th dc in any 7dc section and make one sc in the same st. Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1dc in next st (sc from previous row). Chain 5. 1sc + ch3 + 1sc into corner stitch from row below (3ch sp between two 5dc sections). Chain 5. Leave 5 st and 1dc in next (sc from previous row). Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1sc in 4th st. Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1dc in next (sc from previous row). Repeat all the way around and sl st to first sc.
Round 7 Sl st into first 3ch sp. Chain 3 (counts as 1dc). 2dc in same sp. 5dc in next 5ch sp. 3d + 3ch + 3dc into corner. 5dc in next 5ch sp. [3dc into ch 3 sp] x2 repeat all the way around. Sl st into 3rd chain from first 3ch.
Round 8 Ch1 + sc into sl st. 1sc in every st around. 2sc + 2ch + 2sc in the corners. Sl st to first sc and fasten off.
Step 2 Join each square to each other using an sc in back loop only. If you decide, you can also use a simple whip stitch to connect each square to the next, but I quite like the texture the sc connector gives to the whole bag.

Step 3 Create fabric liner in this pattern. This again can be optional. However, I always line all my crochet bags (unless I'm making a Mochila) because I feel the fabric liner keeps the bag in shape and it doesn't stretch into something completely unusable over time. I also feels it adds a very classy finish.
Step 4 Hand sew liner to rim of bag. You may make tiny holding stitches around the lining of bag as well to secure it to the inside of the crochet shell.
Step 5 Attach handle. I've used a leather handle for mine which I attached with two metal clasps, but you can choose to create a crochet one instead, if you prefer.
I'd love to see what you've done, so if you do make one for yourself, please post your picture in the comments!
