Gauge is not important.

I used a 3.5mm hook and Hobbii Yarn's Rainbow 8/4 pure cotton.

After blocking, my square measured 4.5" x 4.5"

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Chain 4 and join to first st OR make a Magic Ring 

Round 1 Ch 3; 15 dc into magic ring - total 16 st (15+3ch). Join with sl st to third chain from the first 3 ch.

Round 2 4 ch (counts as 1dc + 1ch) into first st. 1 dc + 1ch in every stitch around. Total 16 dc + 16 ch sp

Round 3 Chain 3 in first stitch, 2dc in ch sp. 1dc in next dc + 2dc in ch sp all around. Attach to 3rd chain from first 3ch with sl st.

Round 4 Sc into same sl st; 5 ch, leave 2 st and sc in 3rd st from 5-ch column (forms first corner). [3 ch, leave 2 st and sc in 3rd] x 3; 5 ch, leave two st and sc in 3rd all the way around. Sl st to first sc.  (4 5-ch sp + 12 3-ch sp)

Round 5 Sl st into 5 ch sp, and ch3. 4dc, 3ch, 5dc into 5 ch sp. Sc into 3 ch sp. 7dc into next 3 ch sp. Sc into next 3 ch sp. 5dc+3c+5dc into 5ch sp. Repeat all the way around. Join with sl st to top of first ch3. Fasten off.

Round 6 Change to new colour. Attach thread to 4th dc in any 7dc section and make one sc in the same st. Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1dc in next st (sc from previous row). Chain 5. 1sc + ch3 + 1sc into corner stitch from row below (3ch sp between two 5dc sections). Chain 5. Leave 5 st and 1dc in next (sc from previous row). Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1sc in 4th st. Chain 3. Leave 3 st and 1dc in next (sc from previous row). Repeat all the way around and sl st to first sc.

Round 7 Sl st into first 3ch sp. Chain 3 (counts as 1dc). 2dc in same sp. 5dc in next 5ch sp. 3d + 3ch + 3dc into corner. 5dc in next 5ch sp. [3dc into ch 3 sp] x2 repeat all the way around. Sl st into 3rd chain from first 3ch.

Round 8 Ch1 + sc into sl st. 1sc in every st around. 2sc + 2ch + 2sc in the corners. Sl st to first sc and fasten off.
